stay ready (what a life)- CA, JS
|Warnings: none
|Summary:Be strong and forget about him!Is this so hard for you?
Maybe it's impossible to get over your past relationship, or maybe you just need to find someone that'll make you fall in love again. This should work, right?
You remain shocked as you read an article about your ex boyfriend with his new girlfriend. You almost want to cry,it’s only been three months since your breakup, and you were still devastated.
I mean, you didn’t really got over your ex relationship and in the moment where you were finally healing, you catch up this fucking article.
Jannik Sinner and bla,bla,bla..
You weren’t just jealous, you were also disappointed: he literally hid you for a half of a year because of his “privacy”and now?Photos and revealing facts about his new relationship?
You couldn’t stand it, but you also couldn’t say or do anything, your relationship is over and you have to go over it. Wish it was so easy, though.
You already messaged your girlfriends, of course.
------------------
-Mia: He’s a loser, who cares?
-Evelyn: He’s not a loser, he’s a dick
-Ava:Every loser is a dick
-Mia:period girl
------------------
Thank god your friends were there to help you out,but maybe he wasn’t really a dick, and not even a loser.
He’s actually one of the most responsible people you’ve ever met. He never treated you without respect, of course, but he could at least keep it a secret to let you suffer less and heal.
But now you have to get away with it.
------------------
You: girls don’t be so hard on him, please
Mia: ARE YOU SERIOUS
Ava: …
Evelyn: We lost her again..
------------------
I think that after this, you’ll have to pay your girls to support you.
------------------
Ava:and to be honest, i never trusted him
You: Wait why?
Ava:He’s too much of a gentleman
Evelyn: I agree.
------------------
But unfortunately, that wasn’t the only bad news for today:
You had to go to the Roland Garros, where of course your ex boyfriend would play.
You are famous too, you’re a fucking italian-spanish hot girl in her early 20’s and you had to go there, even if you wanted to die just to think about it. But you’re going to be a responsible person, right? Of course you are, or you hope so.
------------------
Ava: We are going to be with you for the whole journey and we’re going to have so much fun, don’t worry about him
Mia: Maybe you could get a new tennis rich boyfriend, who knows?
You:I don’t think I'm healed for another tennis player in my life, seriously.
Evelyn: That would be fun, though.
------------------
You wish you could do like in the movies where the main character fucks around with everyone just to get revenge on your ex boyfriend, but unfortunately you’re not the kind of person that your friends want you to be.
Oh my god that Anna girl looks really pretty, but most importantly, he seems to be in love, really in love.
You thought that you were always going to be together, what a stupid baby. How could you ever have fooled yourself like this?
All the memories started to flood your mind, you looked like you were about to cry, but as soon as a tear falls on your cheek, you remind yourself again:
You've cried too much, it's time to move on. But the real question is this: will you be able to do it?
-Author’s note
This is the first part of a long (i hope so) fanfiction, and if you trust me, you’ll be satisfied🤭
Thank you always for the support!💗

I'm curious if anyone else feels sad at the rise of Carlos Alcaraz...part of me wants to root for him. More than his brilliance, he seems like a really nice guy. BUT...I don't want Rafa's supreme legacy challenged in any way, shape, or form. I selfishly want Rafa to always be Spain's biggest icon and for his tennis records to be untouched. So I find myself rooting against Alcaraz. Plus, I just miss Rafa...
omg I def understand u anon!! (And u are def not the only one)
Now don't get me wrong, I love Carlitos, he is a great kid and ik he has a big future ahead of him, but I have this feeling of bitter against him, I am a Rafa fan first and foremost, more than anything else. And ik this might sound toxic but I just can't shake this feeling off.
See, Carlitos is just like us, he looks up to Rafa as well. But I'm scared of what might happen if the young Spaniard surpasses Rafa's brilliance. I want Rafa to be legendary forever, to be looked up as the Spanish Legend, King Of Clay forever. Only him. I wonder sometimes is this what the Sampras-Agassi fans felt when Roger appeared and beat Pete? I don't know but damn it doesn't feel great.
As much as I want Carlitos to be the future of tennis, a big part of me just wants Rafa to stay forever, and a part of me that I hate just don't want that (Carlitos as the future) to happen, I want Rafa's legacy to be only his. Untouched. I want him to be the Spanish tennis king forever. ik it's impossible but I can't help it. It's selfish, yes, but I want the future tennis fans to search up Google and when they search up "Greatest Spanish Tennis Player Of All Time" only Rafael Nadal is there. The only single answer.
Even Rafa likes him, why should I, as a mere fan feel this way? But you see, just because we are fans doesn't mean we shouldn't feel what we want to. I know that fans wants to respect their idols/celebs/athletes alot but we shouldn't ignore our own feelings. So it's okay to feel this way, it's selfish, but aren't we all?
I always wish and hope that Rafael Vs Carlos will never ever happen. It did already but I don't want to experience it anymore. What if Carlitos beats Rafa? I don't think I can deal with that, people will start to adore Carlitos more and declare Rafa as "finished" I can't deal with that, I seriously can't. I will pretend to be happy for Carlitos but ik deep down that I will always want Rafa to win. Even though the man I want to win will be so very happy for the boy I want to see lose. I can't help but feel so bad. But I just cannot help it.
And I beat myself up cause Carlitos is such a great kid. But I will be honest sometimes that I didn't want him to win some matches, I didn't want him to be number 1. At the time. See, my motto is fake it till you make it.
Every era comes to an end, and another era will bloom and continue. Maybe the future era will surpass the past's greatness, but all we can do right now is just focus on the present, support the athletes we want to support and love because we will never know when their retirement will come. Like how the Federer fans already lost their fav tennis player, maybe they stopped watching tennis, or maybe they found another younger player to support. It's just how life works.
Your feelings towards this is valid, definitely, and you aren't the only one. trust me.
(and I miss Rafa too, but he'll be playing in Monte Carlo so yay!!)
#i have always loved carlitos he is a great kid and ik he'll do well but its just a feeling i have yk i dont hate him at all#my deepest darkest secret is this#i like carlitos but i love rafa.#i wont rant in the tags like i usually do cause i alr ranted there so like 💀#anywayyssss yeah#i just want rafa back. please. cmon monte carlo why cant you be sooner?#rafael nadal#tennis rambles#carlitos alcaraz#rafa nadal#tennis#sports#sports era#carlos alcaraz

Teaming up with someone who’s fully qualified
Summer can be a good time to focus on marketing. With autumn rapidly approaching, people can often mull over their futures while sitting on a beach or sunning themselves in the back garden.
In other words, that dream job which they desire might be dominating their thoughts. But, how do they achieve that wonderful goal? The use of the Miracle Question can be so powerful that it can really make dreams come true.
Teaming up with someone who’s fully qualified and really knows their stuff can create a positive therapeutic alliance that can power someone all the way to success.
Perhaps now is a good time to focus on looking at Google AdWords and putting aside a budget to help boost your profile.
It might only be a few pounds a week but boosting your Facebook posts can make all the difference as it allows you to specifically target your audience in a set area.
Likewise, writing regular blogs for your website can allow a potential client to get a feel for who you are and what you can do.
The old adage of getting to ‘know, like and trust’ someone comes to the fore and your writing can start to create change in a potential client who’s looking for help.
The rudimentary brain: automated responses
Strawberries, ice cream and an ice cold drink of something refreshing. The perfect ingredients to mull away a few hours watching the thrilling tennis finales at the weekend.
If you missed it then a 20 year old Spanish player broke a 20 year old convention by taking the trophy away from one of the ‘Big Four.’
Fans will know the past two decades has seen the event dominated by Djokovic, Federer, Nadal and Murray. That all changed this year and now a new name can be etched onto the silverware: Carlos Alcarez.
Any successful sporting participant knows their discipline will require a whole heap of determination and focus. Early morning runs. Late nights in the gym. And, perhaps, most importantly: the correct mental approach.
In other words, negative thinking can really ruin our game. Think about the number of times you saw a player demonstrate ‘brain’ thinking. Either with angry cries of frustration or throwing their rackets to the ground.
youtube
I think a lot of us can remember John McEnroe’s infamous 1981 cries of ‘You cannot be serious, man!’ New York attitude hit leafy suburban London. Blighty reeled in shock.
Day One of Wimbledon had heated up to the point of a major meltdown. The Daily Mail (then priced at 12p) splashed it all over the front page with pictures of the tennis star breaking and kicking his racket.
His energy release arguably helped his game. McEnroe went on to win the match. And Wimbledon. The three time Wimbledon winner remains no stranger to centre court as his accent can often be heard emanating from the commentators’ box.
Perhaps McEnroe’s win is an exception to the rule. In the main, if a sports’ person can maintain their cool during a competition then our training shows us they have a greater chance of success.
In other words, if we allow our brain to dominate our thinking then we let negativity start to creep into our mindset. In the sporting world, this can be hugely problematic.
Think about it. Sports’ people train their brains to work in a largely automated fashion. Someone throws a punch and the well trained boxer can duck, dive and weave their way out of trouble. The rest of us would be left lying on the mat.
Hot wiring that level of automated responses into the brain requires a series level of discipline and training.
So, just as most of us don’t think about walking or breathing, the well trained athlete doesn’t need to concentrate too much on the mechanics of their chosen field.
They know they can achieve their goals. They just need to maintain their focus. Throw their focus and they’re facing trouble.
Muhammad Ali knew how to win fights. ‘The Greatest’ would be good at goading his opponent causing them to lose intellectual control and become negative in their thinking. Ali would then steamroll his way to victory.
In short, the intellectual part of the brain needs to remain in charge. If we allow the brain to take over then it starts to struggle with being able to do what we’ve programmed it to do. It’s focus meanders elsewhere. And a sense of failure creeps in.
The brain can really be our Kryptonite. Programme it well and look after it then all is good. Equally, if it’s thinking spirals downwards then things might not go quite so well for us…
For our clients, this process can be centred around reducing their stress bucket levels by regular sessions with you and by listening to your CD (or similar) between meetings. Low stress bucket levels is surely crucial for sport.
The rower focusing on problems with the rent is easily going to lose their stroke. Their brain is so pre-occupied with a potential survival issue (shelter) that it can’t do what it needs to do.
Maintaining the patterned behaviour that it’s learned during months and months of training becomes too much when it’s also worrying about other things. The result? A loss of a relaxed state of concentration. A ‘crab’ gets caught and a Regatta is lost.
We can make all the difference in helping sportspeople to stay on top of their game by working with them to reduce their stress levels so their brains can simple get on with what they do best.
A film with a twist
Sticking with a sporting theme. Have you seen the new Orange advertisement on social media?
We are, of course, not plugging any particular product here but we’re suggesting it’s certainly worthy of a viewing. If you don’t want the ‘plot spoiler’ then look away now!
In short, Orange (France) have produced an advertisement which celebrates football. Watch the first minute and you’ll hear French commentators celebrating goal after goal after goal. Not a footie fan? Stick with it as the second minute becomes enthralling…
The editing team rewind the footage and you can watch as they erase the players and replace them with the ones who actually scored goal after goal after goal.
In short, the genuine footage was actually showing the French female team and not their male counterparts.
With the incredible pace of technological advances, the film shows us how easily our brains can be tricked into believing one thing when the reality is completely different!

WHY CANT I COMMENT😭😭 BUT OH WELL HERE I GO- first of all before I start, trust me I fully understand where u r getting at and totally 100% respect it, but this is just,, an attempt to somehow defend Rafa and just, say whatever I want to cause I don't agree.
“Rafa has just been needlessly rude about it. Calling Novak 'obsessed with records' (as if he's not one to underhand tactics himself)”
this one, I never understood why people see Rafa's comments on this as rude and salty. It's a good thing. I might love to use other words than obsessed which seemed like Rafa was mocking, but he's not, but again he was speaking in Spanish and translation is free to the mind. Seriously, at the time, Rafa was fighting injuries while Novak doing the opposite. Winning everything he could, aka making new records and breaking old ones. Whatever Rafa said, it's true, isn't it? He's being honest about it and it's not a bad thing. Maybe for Rafa his motivation to go on for tennis is different, for every player it's different.
For Novak, as what can be seen from Rafa's eyes at the time are records as Novak's main motivation to go on. With Roger retired and Rafa injured the whole year, it was easy for Novak to grasp all of the records he could possibly get and he did. For Rafa maybe it's different, maybe he's still playing because of his pride or for his love of the game. We wouldn't know. Like how we wouldn't know what Novak's main motivation is, Rafa's merely saying it through his observations. And for me, I think it's true. It's not rude or salty or mean. It's the truth. Novak's obsessed with records, I like to rephrase it as..“Records are more important for Novak.” Same meaning.
“said 'tennis is about emotions' (yeah? since when? how does one quantify that?).”
it was an interview about him. For him. So, for him it's about emotions. It doesn't quantify anything. Does he need to say “for me, for me, for me.” in every single statement he says? No. Because the question was for him and he's answering it however he liked and felt like. It's his interview.
He brought up Roger and Novak about it. How he said he preferred to be with Roger than to be with Novak because of those emotions he felt. Well, let's be true about this yeah. A Roger vs Rafa match is always more preferred to by fans than a Novak Vs Rafa. Why? Let us be honest here, because Novak's not that well liked by fans at the time where the big 3 was still at the top of their game. And, people always loved fedal more, that's true. I sometimes feel bad about Novak too but again, fans. That's not the topic here. But still, more fans, more cheers, more "woos" and "awws" = more 'emotions'. The contrast in their techniques, one being rightie one being leftie, more competition more this and that. Rafa simply liked playing against Roger more than Novak. Also, a factor is because Rafa is a big fan of Roger before he was a rival and a friend. It's always emotional playing against your idol, shows how much you achieved.
Also, remembered the time where Rafa was sobbing his eyes out during Roger's last match? Maybe there was a connection to those emotions when Rafa was saying those words, maybe not. Again. We'll never know. So, be a little more open-minded about stuff and don't just simplify it to Rafa just being rude. It's not like he's mocking Novak.
“Novak has always respected Rafa, and goes to great lengths to call him his 'biggest rival'. ”
well, who else can he say? It's not really great lengths to be honest. Only had to choose either Roger or Rafa to be his ‘biggest rival’. But, in every trio there's a duo, some say. And sure it's a Big 3, but Novak vs Rafa had always been more well known and intense than a Novak vs Roger. It's clear for Novak on who to say is his biggest rival. But for Rafa, it's different, for Rafa he has Roger already. If Rafa were to say his biggest rival is Novak instead of Roger? It's better to say nothing at all because we all know Rafa is closest with Roger than he is with Novak. Despite their age being closer than with Roger. Rafa debuted early, and he had more time to be with Roger and create a bond with him before Novak even appeared on the bigger picture.
‘Was Rafa's famous humility just some front for the media? How does someone so stubborn undergo a total personality shift in such a short space of time?’
this one I don't really understand so I won't say anything about it. (Like, elaborate on the stubborn cause I don't get it..if u want to ofc)
‘Rafa used to congratulate Novak for big achievements, not anymore. Novak won the US Open this year - nothing. Set 400 weeks as Number One - silence. Finished 2023 as number one for the record extending eighth time - also nothing. And won his record seventh ATP Finals title - crickets. Not even a simple congrats tweet since Roland Garros.’
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think he did congratulate Novak on at least one of those?? Or maybe that was Roger's..but still, what change does that even do? Should Rafa congratulate Novak for the rest of his life? Maybe they had some sort of fall out, of Rafa had his own personal reasons. Or maybe what Novak fans said about him is right that he's being spiteful or whatever. Again, how would we know? You can't just hate on someone just because he's not doing what the fans want. Rafa's an adult, he knows what he's doing. Him congratulating Novak or not shouldn't be a big deal. If Novak wants to congratulate every single player in the world then go ahead, if he doesn't, go ahead as well. Mind you, Rafa was busy with his post-surgery and training and trying to get back on track. If he did congratulate Novak that would be a very nice sight to see, but he should do what he wants to. That's what he had always been doing.
‘But I also find it tasteless for Rafa to then wear green and yellow - Australia's national colours - to Roland Garros in 2022, waving his victory in Novak's face. ’
Okay so I think your dislike for Rafa is just making you think negatively about whatever he did. It's NOT a big deal, it's just colours!!! You're just trying to create drama with this bro. It's just colours, plus, his kit was made my his sponsors...ofc he had a say in this as well but you can't just create a whole drama and a reason to find it 'tasteless' just because he's wearing green and yellow. What do you mean waving it in front of Novak bro...it's not like Novak's always on his mind every single time. Maybe he's just trying to celebrate AO and his grand slam. Not everything is about Novak smh. This is so funny 😭😭
I don't understand the thing you said before this so, I'm ignoring that. (sorry mate English isn't my first language)
‘So, my question is this: Which Rafa is the real one? The shy, humble, simple man from Manacor? Or whatever the hell he's being right now? ’
uh he's the same person. full stop. Don't try to make it sound like a telenovela with Rafa having a whole facade and mask or whatever, he's being who he is. A person can have multiple feelings and personalities depending on the situation. Trust me, Rafa is still Rafa.
Sorry if you don't understand some stuff, like I said, English isn't a first language for me. And I also have some trouble understanding what you were saying so I hope I didn't go out of topic. This is in no way of trying to mock u or whatever, I'm just stating my opinion on this. Just like how you stated your own opinion. ❤️
Riddle Me This, please...
What the ever loving hell has happened to Rafa Nadal lately? When did he become so... bitter towards Novak? When did he go from being amicable and ready to praise Novak, to always having to make snide comments about him? What does Rafa have to possibly gain from this?
I've been watching tennis since Wimbledon 2019, my first match being the epic men's final of that year. And, as far as I understood things, the big three are far from besties with each other, but always hold a deep respect for each other. So, like, what's changed for Rafa? Why was Rafa so willing to train with Novak only a few short years ago, and now barely has anything good to say about him? Roger, who has had his (albeit valid at the time) criticisms of Novak over the years, but has since accepted Novak as the runaway Greatest Of All Time. And, Novak for his part, has always been respectful of Roger and his legacy.
I don't know, it seems to me like Rafa was fine to be nice to Novak while he was ahead, but now he's behind, the mask has slipped. Like, as soon as Novak pulled ahead with Masters, Slams, and YE#1, Rafa has just been needlessly rude about it. Calling Novak 'obsessed with records' (as if he's not resorted to underhanded tactics to win himself), said 'tennis is about emotions' (yeah? since when? how does one quantify that?). I just don't understand why Rafa can't at least pretend to be nice to Novak, they used to be quite close, didn't they? Novak has always respected Rafa, and goes to great lengths to call him his 'biggest rival'. Was Rafa's famous humility just some front for the media? How does someone so stubborn undergo a total personality shift in such a short space of time? Rafa used to congratulate Novak for big achievements, not anymore. Novak won the US Open this year - nothing. Set 400 weeks as Number One - silence. Finished 2023 as number one for the record extending eighth time - also nothing. And won his record seventh ATP Finals title - crickets. Not even a simple congrats tweet since Roland Garros.
I disagree with Novak's stance on not getting himself vaccinated, but I also find it tasteless for Rafa to then wear green and yellow - Australia's national colours - to Roland Garros in 2022, waving his victory in Novak's face.
We all know Novak is a proud man, but he'd never say or do the things to Rafa that Rafa has said or done to him. And, even with all the snide comments, Novak refuses to bite back, letting his legacy do the talking. With every important clay record, his Golden Slam, and the rest, why can't Rafa do the same? Roger's letting his own legacy speak for him, even if most of his important records are being eclipsed by Novak.
So, my question is this: Which Rafa is the real one? The shy, humble, simple man from Manacor? Or whatever the hell he's being right now?
And, don't tell me this is a translation problem, I've taken languages in school, and these people who translate his Spanish interviews into English aren't just making shit up - they'd get fired from their publications for that. He is saying some nasty shit in Spanish that sounds just as nasty in English.
#agree to disagree babes#SORRY IM BRINGING THIS TO MY BLOG I SWEAR TO GOD#my blog can be goofy to serious to some controversial shit in a matter of seconds lmao#tennis#novak djokovic#rafael nadal#roger federer

Both families (from her father’s side as well as her mother’s) are really old money, so Jillian grew up in a privileged environment. She went to a prep school, Léman Manhattan Preparatory School, and she was a teenage socialite, given her family name. Though, once she graduated from high school and left for college, she realized the magnitude of the bubble she lived in, and decided to change for the better. Unlike her older siblings, who followed in the family path, she wanted to create a name for herself and be her own person, not just another Valentine and ride on her family’s name and success. And once she discovered Ethan Ramsey and read all of his works, Jill made up her mind. She defied her parents and applied to med school instead of vet school. Her parents didn’t disown her, they still paid for her tuition, but her decision created a huge rift in their relationship and filled it with resentment and passive-aggressiveness, so she grew distant. Jillian left the socialite life and tried to never look back to it, not wanting to be the kind of person that she grew up surrounded by. She has a trust fund, but she swore to never use it unless it was a true emergency, so she still waited tables and worked her way through med school, to pay for rent and living expenses. Jill likes to lay-low and keep her background a mystery; she doesn’t like being associated with her family and having people jumping to conclusions about her, so she tends to keep it a secret, never talking much about her life in New York, in order to avoid someone from figuring out exactly who she is, because then people assume she’s only where she is because she’s a Valentine, and she hates to be viewed like that.
Hobbies & Interests: Tennis, piano, dancing, reading books, watching movies and series (she’s a total literary nerd and a huge geek, especially when it comes to Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Doctor Who, Marvel and Disney), medicine, solving mysteries, make-up, music (mainly rock and jazz, but she has a varied taste).
Talents & Skills: Singing (though she’s shy about it and hates to do it in public because she doesn’t feel comfortable with the attention), dancing (including ballet, ballroom waltz, Latin rhythms and pole-dancing). Jill is trilingual, fully fluid in English, Spanish and French, but can understand and speak a little Italian, German and Portuguese.
Random facts:
Jill has a very specific skin-care routine that she does only on Sundays.
She can cook, but she hates to bake because she almost burned down the kitchen one time and swore to never do it again.
She’s allergic to passion fruit.
Her favorite color is turquoise.
Jill is deeply scared of cockroaches, and hates insects in general.
She’s good at sports even though she’s not a fan of them; she can understand the game in front of her, but she doesn’t know anything about teams, players or statistics.
She’s an animal lover (obviously a family trait) and is the proud mother of a Bernese Mountain Dog called Satchmo and a fennec fox called Vienna.
Jill suffers from anxiety and panic attacks.
Genetically speaking, she doesn’t get hangovers, neither do the rest of Valentines.
She only had one official boyfriend before Ethan, Augustus, and they were together about two years, from 15 to 17 years-old, but they were only together because their families set them up, so they agreed to have an open relationship because they really didn’t want to be together, it was just play-pretend. And before Ethan, Jill had a long string of casual dates and hook-ups (including being friends with benefits with Bryce), but never any serious relationship; she was the “love them and leave them” kind of girl. Jill’s only ever been in love with one man, and that’s Ethan.

Ask game: Please elaborate why you love Carlitos 💕
ok, this question makes me really happy 😃
it all started with an Insta-Story of ATP Tour of Carlos promoting the Mexican Open 2021 and that was probably the first time I consciously saw him anywhere, then I saw a YT-video of him from the Barcelona Open 2021 where he answered the question "Barca or Madrid?" with "Madrid!!!" and since I love Real Madrid I was like "hell, i like this guy!".
Since then, I've followed him in every tournament he's played because I love his style of play. So powerful, so fast, he plays every single point and leaves no stone unturned.
But it got really extreme with the "Red Bull Bassline" event in 2021 where I met him in person. Firstly, his tennis is even more impressive in real life because you can HEAR the power with which he hits the balls and secondly, because he is just unbelievably friendly. He took all the time in the world for the fans, signed autographs and took photos when all the other players were already long gone (he even stopped in front of the hall and took a photo with everyone who asked him). I was so nervous meeting him, I stuttered, at some point I gave up my Spanish and spoke to him in English and he took the time to listen to me! Thanked me for all the congratulations…he was just so patient and friendly with all the fans.
And even though he knows how talented he is and how much he can (and will) achieve, he is always focused on every single game. I also have the feeling that he is really humble and knows that he still has a lot of work to do. And I love the relationship he has with Juan Carlos Ferrero, how great the two work together, how much Carlitos trusts him...
but yeah, I love him bc he isn't afraid to dream big but works so so hard for it. and I honestly can't put into words how much it meant to me to meet him back then, that he really took the time to listen to my ramblings, to take photos (even to ask if the photos turned out well). he just keeps impressing me (and I love his Spanish and his accent in English)
i could probably go on forever, i just really like him and it means so much to me that he won this today!!! And it also means a lot to me that you listen to my Carlos ramblings 🤗
thank you so so much!! 💙 feel hugged!!
Anonymously ask me anything you want.

US Open PIX: Fearless Fernandez knocks out Kerber
US Open PIX: Fearless Fernandez knocks out Kerber
Images from Day 7 of the 2021 US Open in New York on Sunday.

Leylah Fernandez brushed aside yet another former champion as the fearless Canadian teenager stormed into the quarter-finals of the US Open on Sunday with a 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 win over 16th seed Angelique Kerber.
It was a precocious and poised performance from Fernandez, who celebrates her 19th birthday on Monday and had already sent a jolt through Flushing Meadows on Friday when she stunned third seed and defending champion Naomi Osaka.
There would be no letdown for Fernandez after the biggest win of her fledgling career, the youngster soaking up the energy from a seething Louis Armstrong crowd after dropping the opening set to three-times Grand Slam winner Kerber.
“Honestly, the crowd has been amazing, so thanks to them I was able to win,” said Fernandez, who next faces fifth seeded Ukrainian Elina Svitolina.
“I was just trusting my game. She’s an incredible fighter, incredible player.
“Just putting one more ball back in, fighting, and just having fun on the court.”

Fernandez had grabbed the early break at 4-2 but could not consolidate it as Kerber, the 2016 US Open winner, broke right back with the help of a pair of double-faults by the Canadian.
Having made the breakthrough, the experienced German quickly took command, winning four straight games to open up a 1-0 lead.
But Fernandez remained unfazed, fist-pumping and screaming with each winner throughout a tight second set that went to a tie-break that she took 7-5.
Kerber, 15 years older than her opponent, countered Fernandez’s enthusiasm with veteran calm and focus, but it was the 73rd ranked Canadian taking charge in the third, sweeping the final five games to clinch a breathtaking victory.
“I think it was a tough one,” said Kerber. “I mean I gave everything I had today. She played I think an unbelievable match, especially in the third set.”
“I think she played also one of her best matches in her career, and she had nothing to lose. “She went out there, she played her tennis. She really is going for her winners.”
Krejcikova beats Muguruza to reach quarter-finals

Barbora Krejcikova survived a Garbine Muguruza fightback and late injury issue to claim a 6-3, 7-6(4) win and move into the quarter-finals of the US Open on Sunday, while her Spanish opponent’s run at Flushing Meadows ended at a familiar roadblock.
Playing in the US Open main draw for the first time after failing to qualify on five occasions, Czech Krejcikova has suddenly found form on the New York hardcourts, at times looking as comfortable as she did earlier this year on clay winning the French Open.
However, Krejcikova, who called a medical time out late in the second set, looked in distress after the match and was helped off the court by medical staff.
For Muguruza, it was a familiar end to her Flushing Meadows campaign.
IMAGE: Barbora Krejcikova was playing in the US Open main draw for the first time after failing to qualify on five occasions. Photograph: Sarah Stier/Getty Images
The Spaniard has won the French Open and Wimbledon, reached the final in Australia but has failed to reach the quarter-finals at the US Open.
With the clock ticking towards midnight in New York, Muguruza sleepwalked through the early games as Krejcikova surged to a 3-0 lead.
The Spaniard eventually emerged from her slumber but Krejcikova was already in full stride, sweeping through seven straight games to take the opening set and a 4-0 lead in the second at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Muguruza mounted a determined comeback, piling on the pressure to win five games on the trot to move ahead 5-4.
With the score at 6-5 and preparing to serve to force a tie-break, Krejcikova called a medical timeout and left the court clutching her abdomen.
After returning to the court, the Czech held serve to love to force the tie-break, which she easily won 7-4.
Svitolina stays in hunt by beating Halep in fourth round
IMAGE: Elina Svitolina is yet to drop a set at Flushing Meadows this year, and is on an eight-match winning streak after triumphing in Chicago last month. Photograph: Sarah Stier/Getty Images
Olympic bronze medallist Elina Svitolina stepped up her bid to secure a first major title when she produced a ruthless performance to dispatch Simona Halep 6-3, 6-3 in the fourth round of the US Open on Sunday.
Following the shock exits of pre-tournament favourites Ash Barty and Naomi Osaka, fifth seed Svitolina will be among those whose chances of triumphing at Flushing Meadows have been boosted and she made sure she stayed in the hunt by getting rid of another multiple Grand Slam champion.
The 12th-seeded Halep, who triumphed at the French Open in 2018 and at Wimbledon a year later, won an epic 33-shot rally in the second game but a dozen unforced errors in the first set handed Svitolina the upper hand.
With the set tied 3-3, the Ukrainian fended off two break points to hold serve, prompting the frustrated Romanian to fling her racquet to the ground.
“In the first set the key game was coming back from 15-40 at 3-All. It was really important to take one point at a time and fight to come back,” Svitolina said. “I think it was really strong performance from me on the important moments.”
Svitolina kept up the momentum in the second set, producing three aces and winning more than 80% of her first-serve points.
She survived a number of long rallies to break the two-time Grand Slam winner’s serve in the seventh game on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The Tokyo bronze medallist said she was thrilled to topple “big fighter” Halep as she hopes to reach her first Grand Slam final at Flushing Meadows.
“We really missed you guys,” Svitolina told the fans. “It’s an unbelievable atmosphere each time… I have goosebumps right now.”
The 2019 semi-finalist has yet to drop a set at Flushing Meadows this year, and is on an eight-match winning streak after triumphing in Chicago last month.
“I’m playing really aggressive right now. I think the most aggressive I’ve ever been, making lots of winners, serving really good,” she said. “I want to keep this going, feeling that I’m in a good mind.”
Halep, who missed the French Open, Wimbledon, the Olympics after tearing a calf muscle in May, said she felt positive about her performance after getting little playing time in the run up to the year’s final major.
“No pain, no injury. So this is the most important thing,” said Halep, adding that she would speak with her doctors before deciding whether to compete at Indian Wells next month.
“I need a little bit of rest and to reflect a little bit what I have to do better next time against her because always it’s been a tough match with her.”
Alcaraz youngest in Open era to reach men’s quarters

Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest player in the Open era to reach the quarter-finals of the men’s tournament at Flushing Meadows after the 18-year-old Spaniard beat Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk 5-7, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 at the US Open on Sunday.
Alcaraz, who is 18 years and four months old, is eight days younger than Andre Agassi when the American reached the 1988 US Open quarter-finals and semi-finals, according to US Open stats.
The Spaniard is also the youngest to reach this stage in New York since Brazilian Thomaz Koch in 1963, five years before the sport turned professional, when the tournament was known as the US Championships.
“It’s really tough to play these kind of matches, to play fifth sets,” Alcaraz told reporters.
“I hope to play more second weeks, to play more quarter-finals of Grand Slams. I didn’t expect to play (in the) quarter-finals here.”
Gojowczyk, 14 years older than Alcaraz and playing in the fourth round of a major for the first time, made a bright start to edge the first set, but was hampered by an injury to his thigh and took a medical timeout midway through the fourth.
The German fought hard but faded badly as the match wore on, labouring behind the baseline as Alcaraz closed out the match with a bagel in the decider, sealing victory in three hours, 31 minutes when Gojowczyk sent a forehand sailing long.
Alcaraz smashed 35 winners and seven aces while winning 15 points at the net, feeding off the energy of the vocal crowd on Grandstand, while his opponent ended the match with a whopping 84 unforced errors.
“In the first sets I thought that I reached my limit physically and mentally. I think the crowd was really, really important for me in this situation,” Alcaraz added.
“I felt the energy of the crowd pushing me up… without the crowd, it couldn’t be possible to be here.”
Next up for the Spaniard is 12th-seeded Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, who dispatched American Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(6), 6-4.
Auger-Aliassime breaks down Tiafoe’s defences to reach quarters

Felix Auger-Aliassime broke through Frances Tiafoe’s defences to win 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(6), 6-4 at the US Open on Sunday in a fourth-round battle between two of the sport’s brightest young talents.
Both players came into the tie at Arthur Ashe Stadium on the back of tough five-setters and it was 23-year-old Tiafoe who started the brighter, going up a break after the first game and shutting down all eight of the Canadian’s break point opportunities to go up 1-0.
Auger-Aliassime, 21, came roaring back in the second set, however, winning all but one of his first-serve points and making just four unforced errors to level the match.
Auger-Aliassime, seeded 12th, rocketed four aces in the ninth game of the third set and twice had a chance to close out the set in the 10th but American Tiafoe dug in his heels to hold serve and fire up his fans in the New York crowd.
Feeding off the energy, Tiafoe then went 3-1 up in a tiebreak but Auger-Aliassime battled back before clinching the final three points to close out the set.
Auger-Aliassime broke to kick off the fourth set and immediately fought off three break points to hold his own serve, going on to clinch the match with a forehand winner and reach his second consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final.
Tiafoe left the court to wild applause and his opponent praised his efforts.
“I understand supporting your fellow American — he deserves the applause, he’s done an amazing effort,” he said in an on-court interview.
Tiafoe said there had not been much between them.
“It was a tough start for me – a lot of nerves,” he said. “I played a great second set and then the third set was almost a coin toss.”
Next up for Auger-Aliassime is 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz, the youngest male player to reach the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows in the Open era.
“He’s a great player. At some point, age is just a number and he already feels like a player that’s established,” said the Canadian.
Speedy Medvedev makes quick work of Evans
IMAGE: Daniil Medvedev outclassed Dan Evans of Great Britain in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals for the third year in a row. Photograph: Sarah Stier/Getty Images
Daniil Medvedev fired off 13 aces to end British hope Dan Evans’ US Open challenge with a quickfire 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 victory in the fourth round on Sunday.
Evans had survived a fifth set tiebreak against Alexei Popyrin to reach the last 16 but on day seven of the hardcourt major, he was no match for the Russian second seed.
Evans handed Medvedev the early break with a double fault in the fourth game of the first set and never recovered from that setback as the Russian belted 43 winners.
Medvedev, who lost in the final to Rafa Nadal two years ago, closed out the final game of the second set in less than a minute with a pair of aces and a service winner and won all of his first-serve points in the third on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
He sealed the match in one hour and 43 minutes to roars from the rowdy New York crowd, which he won over in a remarkable transformation from villain to fan-favourite in 2019, reaching the quarter-finals for the third year in a row.
“I knew I had to keep my focus from start to finish. I was serving good,” said Medvedev. “I was trying to change up the game, mix up the game, and I’m really happy that I beat such tough opponent with that score and with that much energy left.”
He next faces Dutch qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp, who continued his unexpected run in the tournament by taming Argentine battler Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 5-7, 6-1.
Ticketholders looking to maximize their time inside Flushing Meadows’ famed stadiums would do well to steer clear of the world number two, as he has defeated each of his opponents in under two hours and has yet to drop a set.

What's the most relaxing thing you did today? Motherfucking SLEEP. I slept from 10-11 AM and 2-3 PM today and it was the most glorious feeling. Those have been the only naps I’ve been able to sneak in all week. Do you shop at the grocery store closest to your house? Yes, we do. We have two stores that are in different locations but are the same distance from the house anyway, so my mom switches between the two of them. Which one of your guy friends is the best looking? Uh I guess Jez. I never answer questions like this since my circle knows me to be pretty gay, but I’d pick him. What does your car smell like? Still smells quite new. Who could make you feel better right now? Miraculously I don’t need to be feeling better at the moment. Maybe because I’m answering this on a new laptop and this is the only thing I need? Hahaha idk.
Which three people (who don't have a Myspace) would be in your top friends? LOL. Don’t care for this question but funny/sad story: I was having dinner with Gabie’s family last night and we started talking about the old internet. Apparently her 12 year old sister doesn’t recognize Myspace, Multiply, Yahoo Messenger, and Friendster anymore. Times are a-changing, people. Gab and I were horrified. Have you had an epiphany lately? Nah. What color shoes are you wearing? I’m barefoot when inside the house. Which one of your friends is the most brutally honest? I think Kaira beats me when it comes to being blunt. Miracle Whip or Mayo? Whipped cream is expensive where I live and unnecessary, so I never have it. I put mayonnaise on everything. Who/What influences your taste in music the most? My friends mostly. I let them have control over my car’s bluetooth and then I always find myself listening to what they played after the ride. Do you have anything to say to your ex bf/gf? No ex. What's your favorite kind of foreign food? I like anything Indian, anything street food, anything sushi. I’m not a picky eater and WILL try everything once. Except for fruit. In what year will/did you turn 21? 2019. Who was the last person you gave a birthday present to? Gabie I think. I’m not a big gift person though, and instead I drove her out and treated her to lunch. What do you think of the person who took this survey last? I took this survey from the original poster so heh. Which one of your friends do you look most like? ??? I have no idea, we’ve never compared each other physically. Puedes hablar español bueno? No I can’t, actually. I understand very basic Spanish, and a lot of random words are recognized because we also use them in Filipino. That knowledge isn’t enough for me to be able to carry conversations, but I can sometimes understand phrases. Which day of the week do you watch the most TV? I literally only watch TV when we happen to be at a hotel, which happens like every four months. What's your favorite vegetable? Broccoli. Which one of your senses would you not mind losing? Losing any of them would be terrible. Which band do you have the most of on your iPod/music player? I don’t iPod anymore, but I listen to Paramore on Spotify a lot. Which song describes your mood at the moment? Meh, none. There are songs I feel like listening to but no song can match my mood right now. Which movie(s) do you quote the most? None. What's the closest pink object to you? My top. Do you really weigh the weight on your driver's license? I don’t. Do people??? What's your favorite non-carbonated, non-alcoholic beverage? Water. What's the most epic thing you've done so far this month? I MET GABIE’S DAD LAST NIGHT. It went REALLY well and I cannot be any happier now. Obviously it happened much sooner than we expected, coming out and all, but being accepted and immediately given a thumbs up by the only man my girlfriend has ever really loved is my biggest reward. Which one of your best friend's friends would you most likely date? Gabie. Which word do you have the hardest time spelling? I can’t think of any, but I used to struggle with rhythm. Big Mac or Whopper? Baconator. Have you ever been to an 'Adult Gift' store? Nope. What's your favorite vacation spot? I love Baguio as an ideal vacation spot, but my parents have never seen the big deal with it and I’ve only been there thrice :( What color underwear are you wearing? Green. Have you ever slapped anybody? My siblings when we were little kids, but never as like a full grown person. What's your second favorite sport? Table tennis. Wrestling comes first. What are you listening to right now? Just my electric fan on level 3, no music. Where will you be in six hours? Asleep in bed probably. What do you wish you had more time to do? I do have enough time to do all the things I need for myself, but my anxiety comes in and makes sure I hesitate from starting them. Like going out with friends - I could very well do it whenever I want, but I never want to be the one asking them out first. Going out after school and giving myself alone time - I would do it since I get out of school at 11 AM - but I can’t handle being alone. So there is that. Who was the last person to ride in your passenger's seat? Gabie, when I drove her home last night. Would you ever let anybody else drive your car? No. Gabie only if it’s really necessary, but she’s hit her car several times and my trust in her driving isn’t as through the roof these days lol. Which one of your friends will be the most successful? All of them. How old will you be on your next birthday? I’ll be 20 and I am so excited to finally get out of this decade. What store did you last shop at? Filbar’s. It’s a local store that has Funkos, limited edition comic book/TV show merch, novelty items, just about all the graphic novels and comic books you need, action figures, swords, replicas, etc. What is your absolute favorite band? It will always be an absolute tie between Paramore and Against Me!

He later honed in on his acting skills at the University of Birmingham and then at Londonâ€s Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. He also appeared as the spirit Ariel in a production of William Shakespeareâ€s “The Tempest” and “Lorca’s Blood Wedding.”
Graduating from the London phase, Goode made his on-screen debut in the ABC-TV movie “Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister” (2002), alongside Stockard Channing and Trudie Styler. In the retelling of the Cinderella story through the eyes of one of the ugly stepsisters, based on the 1999 novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire, he portrayed Casper, the painter who gets Azura Skyeâ€s Iris Fisherâ€s love interest.
Being asked about how it was moving from stage acting to film, Goode replied, “Weird, because I hoped to be taken under the wings of other actors but it depends on whom you work with. Iâ€ve been lucky. Iâ€ve heard some horror stories where there have been jealousies from older actors. You also hope to have a director whoâ€s being nice to you and explaining things. Hanging out and chatting with older actors is the very best thing in the world.”
Following his on-screen debut, Goode landed the next yearâ€s English/Spanish role as real-life writer Gerald Brenan, an Englishman who spent much of his life and was honored in Spain, in director Fernando Colomo’s film adaptation of Brenan’s book, Al sur de Granada (2003; a.k.a. South from Granada). The film made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival and was released theatrically in Spain. That same year, Goode starred as the title roleâ€s brother in the BBC’s “The Inspector Lynley Mysteries: A Suitable Vengeance,” starring Nathaniel Parker.
2004 was Goodeâ€s breakout year with the role of Ben Calder, the love interest of the American President’s daughter (played by Mandy Moore) who turns out to be an undercover agent, in Chasing Liberty, a romantic comedy by director Andy Cadiff. Also that year, Goode played the lead role in BBC’s period production of Anthony Trollope’s 1869 novel, He Knew He Was Right, alongside Laura Fraser and Bill Nighy.
The following year saw Goode playing another prominent role, this time as a wealthy, young playboy named Tom who befriends a successful professional tennis player, played by Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, in writer-director Woody Allen’s Oscar nominated film, Match Point (also starring Scarlett Johansson and Emily Mortimer). Commenting on Match Point writer-director Woody Allen, Goode explained, “Sometimes, when you have a really hands-on director like a Michael Bay-type who shouts a whole lot, it’s just so not good for your confidence and what’s great about the way he (Allen) works is you don’t block your instincts. You have full faith in him. You start to trust yourself as an actor and you come away from it astonishingly fulfilled and you totally trust him and that really doesn’t happen that much. You come away thinking I’m all right at this.”
Also in that year, Goode co-starred as the groom whose bride (played by Piper Perabo) becomes infatuated with another woman (played by Lena Headey) in writer-director Ol Parker’s British romantic comedy film Think about Me & You. On the small screen, he could be seen in the made-for-TV movies Marple: A Murder Is Announced (starring Geraldine McEwan), an Emmy-nominated TV adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novel, and My Family and Other Animals (starring Imelda Staunton), which was inspired by Gerald Durrell’s book.
Goode subsequently was cast opposite Diane Kruger and Ed Harris in Copying Beethoven (2006), a dramatic film directed by Agnieszka Holland about the last year of the composer’s life. His latest film, The Lookout, a crime/drama/thriller by initial-time director Scott Frank, was released on March 30, 2007. In the film that also stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jeff Daniels and Isla Fisher, Goode co-stars as a gang leader who plots a bank robbery.
Currently, Goode is on set filming his upcoming big screen project, Brideshead Revisited. In director Julian Jarrold’s film adaptation of a 1945 novel by English writer Evelyn Waugh, Goode will portray the lead role of Captain Charles Ryder. He revealed, “In June, we start working on the feature film Brideshead Revisited, a remake of the 1981 miniseries based on a book by Evelyn Waugh, which is amazing. Itâ€s what made Jeremy Irons, I suppose, and Anthony Andrews, Diana Quick, John Gielgud and Sir Laurence Olivier. Weâ€re doing the remake, whereas in the television series they had eleven luxurious hours to play it out. We only have two hours and itâ€s been twenty years, but itâ€s a great cast and weâ€ll wait and see, I suppose. Hayley Atwell will play the lead female character Julia Flyte.”
“Yeah, absolutely I need to have to work. I was hoping to do â€Glass Menagerie†for a while. I love that play. Unfortunately Iâ€ve already done that. So Iâ€m trying to get a play with Karen Hines because I love her. Sheâ€s a fantastic actor, so yeah, weâ€re looking for something.” Matthew Goode

Check-In Time: Rundown Motels Are Becoming Cool Condos, Affordable Apartments
istock; realtor.com
Luna Lodge, in Albuquerque, NM, is the quintessential Route 66 motel.
A kitschy, neon sign with an arrow points to the parking lot that’s lined by three square Pueblo Spanish Revival buildings with flared stucco hoods over the doors. The 1949 property was even placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 “as one of the best examples of a largely unaltered tourist court remaining along New Mexico Route 66.”
But despite its iconic status, the motel fell into disrepair over the decades. The dilapidated, boarded-up building became a magnet for criminal activity.
Then Luna Lodge got a new lease on life. In 2013, the renovated building once again began welcoming people into its rooms. But they weren’t just passing through. The former motel had been converted into 30 affordable apartments for low-income and disabled tenants.
As more and more travelers have turned away from classic motor lodges and hotels in favor of spacious Airbnbs with all the comforts of home, many of those old way stations have been left behind. While many have been demolished, others linger on in varying states of neglect. But over the past half-decade, a growing segment of city governments, nonprofit organizations, and developers have been reclaiming these structures to transform them into apartments and condos to meet a growing need for housing.
There were about 16,000 motels open for business in 2012, representing just 27% of the 61,000 operating during their heyday in the 1950s, according to Mark Okrant, author of “No Vacancy: The Rise, Demise and Reprise of America’s Motels.” The number has dropped even further over the past six years.
“Motels developed a negative reputation that has carried along for the past 40 or 50 years: They are regarded as anything from cheap to honky-tonk, a place to go for a one-night or one-hour stand,” says Okrant.
In decades past, these properties, many of which are located on prime commercial arteries, would have been turned into shopping spaces. But with the rise of e-commerce (thanks, Amazon), that’s no longer practical.
“People are starting to think, ‘What do I do with this thing?’”says KC Conway, an economist at the commercial real estate group CCIM Institute.

Converting motels and hotels into residential buildings makes good business sense. After all, they’re often located in or near tourist destinations, or places where people live and work—and where there’s a shortage of housing.
In booming Atlanta, what used to be a Hawthorne Suites extended-stay hotel was completely overhauled into luxury apartments in late 2016. The Metro, as it’s called, features 200 units topping out at $1,550 for 1,154-square-foot, two-bedrooms with new HVAC systems, stainless-steel appliances, and quartz countertops.
Plus, the property has a pool, tennis court, and multiple fitness centers.
“It was totally renovated inside and out,” says manager Montecchia Walker. The complex has maintained about a 93% occupancy rate since it debuted.
Some properties that don’t boast the larger, apartmentlike units typical of an extended-stay hotel are getting upgraded to attract younger renters.
In Eagle, CO, a bedroom community on the outskirts of the infamously expensive ski resorts of Vail and Beaver Creek, K Real Estate Development picked up a struggling AmericInn right off Interstate Highway 70. It then turned the inn into a millennial haven called The House. Units start at $1,360 a month, a couple hundred more than the going rate for a one-bedroom in the housing-strapped area. The first 10 tenants moved in in December.
While the basic configuration of the rooms was untouched (concrete walls and precast concrete floor decking made big changes nearly impossible), the studios and one-bedroom units come fully furnished. They even have new kitchenettes featuring a sink, fridge, and hot plate.
Areas that formerly catered to hotel guests have been converted into community spaces. Hammocks and exercise equipment now sit over what was once an indoor pool, and there are plans to start group yoga and fitness classes. The old sauna now offers a station to wash dogs or mountain bikes. And the former check-in area has been converted into a lounge with comfy couches.
“The idea is you only sleep in your room and you have all this other space to hang out,” says co-owner Kelly Herzog. “It’s a built-in community.”
Former motels can make great vacation homes A former Long Beach Island, NJ, motel that was converted into condos

On the New Jersey shore, savvy developers have been buying up old motels from owners who want to retire. These properties are now being reimagined as condos for urbanites who’d like a summer house—but can’t fork over the $1 million needed to get a single-family house on the beach.
“Developers are finding that it’s easier to find 10 buyers who want to spend $200,000 on a condo than one buyer who wants to spend millions on a large motel they’d have to operate,” says Realtor® Nathan Colmer, who’s with the Van Dyk Group in Long Beach Island, NJ.
For as little as $129,000, beach-home seekers can pick up a small one-bedroom with pool access just blocks from the famous dunes in Seaside Heights, NJ. They boast low homeowners association fees and few restrictions on owners renting out the units.
“A single-family in the same location would cost $2 million,” says Colmer.
But while these beachside retreats are a relative steal, the vast majority of them are not designed for folks who want to live in them year-round. They tend to have kitchenettes, and most are open to residents only from April through the fall.
“For the most part, these are strictly summer destinations,” says Colmer.
Motel conversions can add some much-needed housing stock The House is a former motel that became apartments designed for millennials.

Turning old motels into housing can also add inventory to markets where there simply aren’t enough homes to meet demand.
In Eagle, The House’s co-owner, Herzog, had learned that the surrounding Vail Valley is about 4,000 housing units short of what’s needed to accommodate its workforce. So when a friend in real estate told her an underused lodge would be coming onto the market, she jumped on it.
What’s happening in Vail Valley is similar to many other desirable real estate markets. The share of renters considered severely rent-burdened—spending 50% or more of their monthly income on rent—increased by 42% between 2001 and 2015, according to a 2018 study by the Pew Charitable Trusts.
Now, builders are finally putting up homes again after a long, postrecession slump. However, the high cost of land and materials, and the nationwide construction worker shortage, has prompted the majority to focus on higher-end developments, where they can capture greater profits. Converting existing motels into new housing is an appealingly affordable option for developers as well as tenants.
In the notoriously expensive San Francisco Bay Area, the formerly blighted Islander Motel in Alameda was turned into a complex of 62 affordable studios in 2013. Dubbed the Park Alameda, the community offers numerous green building features and a community garden for local workers making between 20% and 50% of the median income in Alameda County. The rent of $300 to $785 is well below the area’s median $2,208 for a studio.
For the homeless and disabled, these adaptive reuse projects have been a godsend. Low-income motel conversions have been sprouting up across the U.S., from the Gulf Coast of Florida to a 101-room former Budget Inn in Sacramento, CA. Old Route 66 landmarks like Luna Lodge and its nearby sister property, the Sundowner, have been transformed into peaceful sanctuaries for folks making less than half the local median income. A quarter of the units have been set aside for formerly homeless tenants and those with special needs.
These homes have helped many of their residents get back on their feet.
Though the residential conversion of failing motels is growing, there’s still a long way to go until it catches on nationwide. Banks don’t fully understand the concept, so many of the big players are reluctant to write loans on these conversions. City zoning and local building ordinances need to be rewritten.
And in some areas, these affordable housing projects have spawned backlash from local communities such as Pine Hills, FL, where One Stop Housing is proposing to convert the formerly crime-ridden Magnolia Inn and Suites into 214 studios that would rent for $750 a month. The company has been buying up old motels and turning them into apartments across the state. But some members of the community don’t want low-income housing in their backyard.
While Herzog considers herself lucky for having some innovative members on her city council in Eagle, it took more than a year to change the zoning from commercial to residential.
“It seems like a logical way to help with the housing issue if you can find the right spot,” says Herzog. “You don’t have to go out and rebuild something; you’re using what’s already there.”
